Mary Greenwell is one of the most respected makeup artists in the global fashion and beauty industry. Known for her flawless application (done almost entirely with her hands!), warmth, humour and eccentricity. Mary’s artistry occupies a space in the upper echelons of makeup talent alongside Laura Mercier, Pat McGrath, Kevyn Aucoin and Bobbi Brown. Working with names including Princess Diana, Mario Testino, Cate Blanchett, Giselle Bundchen, Kate Moss and even the odd Kardashian! Mary’s career spans from the birth of the original supermodels, to plenty of Vogue covers and royalty. Both Lisa Eldridge and Charlotte Tilbury were trained by Mary – her legacy and influence is completely unrivalled.
So my meeting Mary is comparable to an art student meeting Vincent Van Gough, or an Apple store worker meeting Steve Jobs!
It would seem this blog starts with quite a bang! I don’t know how am going to get better content! *panic-stricken face* – I might give up now!
Being the excitable creature I am, not much sleep was managed the night before and I arrived at our breakfast date early, with the intention of slipping on some heels and powdering my nose before meeting Mary – who was even earlier than me! Kisses and greetings ensued before sitting down to discuss all things going on in the beauty industry, her fragrance range, YouTube and lots of funny stories.
One of Mary’s not so well known talents is that she blow dries her own hair, superbly. I was amazed by the professional-looking job she did on her gorgeous blonde locks.
The coffee was flowing and we chatted about our mutual love for Wayne Goss and his fabulous brushes (a post on them coming soon!), one of the BEST concealers – NARS radiant creamy concealer and after inspecting my skin, Mary recommended I try Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow, which is on its way to me now! Along with some other products her lovely agent is sending. How nice!!
Eventually… THE makeup bag came out. Yes, that’s right… Mary Greenwell’s own. Personal. Makeup. Bag. She emptied it and kindly let me pore over the contents before taking my phone to snap away at the product arrangement, fully aware of the
gold diamond dust she was bestowing onto me. If you ever want to see what the world’s most famous makeup artist uses on HER OWN FACE then take deep breaths and look below:
Chanel Les Beiges pressed powder, SURRATT Lipslique, SENSAI lipstick, Mac cream in your coffee lipstick (Mary’s favourite), By Terry Ombre Blackstar, Chanel lipbrush, Tom Ford cream eyeshadow (sadly discontinued – WHY Tom, why?!), Estee Lauder concealer, SENSAI Mascara, Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara, Eve Lom tinted moisturiser, Laura Mercier cream eyeshadow.
The bottle you can see is of a new Mary Greenwell fragrance that I cannot name but will describe as fresh, clean, addictive and like a breeze of crisp air. I will stay up to date on the launch of this gorgeous fragrance because it is something you won’t want to miss.
What I love about Mary is her warmth and infectious energy; She darts from animated anecdote to enthusiastic love for a beauty product and back to a silly story, a woman after my own heart. Not only is she fun, but Mary has carved a reputation as being incredibly tenacious, expecting the same quality of work from all around her. She is generous with her knowledge and love, which is so refreshing for someone as established in fashion and beauty world. Believe me, I have met some very difficult characters and inflated egos!
There we have it! The beauty world’s finest insider knowledge with the incredible Mary Greenwell.
